| Summary |
The EPSRC is the UK?s main agency for funding research and related postgraduate training in engineering and the physical sciences. It aims to identify and support the highest quality research possible, and in so doing looks to address the critical issue of supplying skilled researchers in key areas. EPSRC actively works with professional bodies like the Institution of Civil Engineers as a key means of disseminating and publicising the research that it has funded.
Since The Bruntland Report in 1987 defined sustainable development as that "which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" there has been a growing impetus to explore and research the viability and potential of sustainable cities.
Developing cities that incorporate economic, environmental and social sustainability, requires interrelationships and collaboration between professionals to meet the needs of users of the urban environment.
In such an environment there is a role for everyone. For while urban planners and architects need to design out crime and design in health and the provision of services that encourage local enterprise and social inclusion, transport engineers need to provide the infrastructure for sustainable modes of transport. Similarly the regeneration of cities, brownfield sites and the process of land remediation rely on waste management and geotechnical engineers to ensure the buildings will survive and meet the needs and standards of users for generations to come.
This Showcase aims to expose some of the current research into sustainable cities currently taking place. It is one of a series of EPSRC/ ICE events organised to showcase recent engineering research and will provide an excellent opportunity for networking.
