With the ongoing realisation of the need for sustainability and green buildings in various areas of the construction industry, demands are being made by non-profit organisations, international government bodies, etc to adopt an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach to developmental projects. On the7th of March 2005, the UK Government launched its new strategy for sustainable development, "Securing The Future". In the construction industry it has been discovered that the type of building materials used has a great role to play in sustainability issues like ecological foot prints, ecological rucksacks, material intensity, factor four, factor ten; it also touches energy efficiency issues , overall whole life cycle costing, and construction time of a project. Steel concrete and glass (with focus on steel) commonly used in large structures are recyclable, expensive, requires a high amount of energy during construction and its life cycle which is in contrast with timber which is renewable requires lower amount of energy. This research tries to find out how and to what extent can timber work in synergy with steel via gradual substitution of substitutable steel members in large structures, this will be based on research findings of why, with the aim of improving its sustainability value, energy efficiency and reduction of construction cost and time of these large steel structures.
